There are seven basic stitches used in chikan embroidery. The most frequently used stitches are embroidery, back stitch, and chain stitch. Some of these basic stitches can be combined with other stitches, such as a back stitch with a chain stitch (making a cross-stitch). The more complicated and interesting design is made from a combination of simple straight, running, and laid or couched patterns. In addition to these six stitches, there is another stitch called the stem which is worked by laying down one colour over another. In all cases when working from right to left, you begin at the top and work downward; when working from left to right you begin at the bottom and work upward. It is important that you know what direction your chikankari embroidery will go before starting a piece so that your threads will not get tangled up during stitching.
