This traditional clothing originated on the Indian subcontinent. The Sanskrit word karate or Kurt aku gave rise to the word kurta, which has its roots in the Urdu and Hindustani languages. It literally translates as "collarless shirt" in Persian, and while this particular outfit does not have a collar, some variations do.
